I've tried similar programs and experienced a significant strength gain but not as much in muscle volume.  Many people who "lift heavy or go home" eventually do end up with an injury.  Lifting upwards of your max all the time takes it toll on more than just your muscles.

While I do cycle around with high volume and heavier, low rep workouts, I tend to shy away from "One Rep Max" type programs.  It requires you truly give your all and have a capable spotter if you are going for a 95+% of your maximum effort.

Most people, just don't push themselves to that breaking point.  It's very difficult.
